North Landing
The Pale Blue EyeNorth Landing is one of two guarded landings discussed by Augustus Landor and Edgar Allan Poe while they seek a suitably private meeting place. The meeting is ultimately assigned not to the landing itself but to a cove nearby, making North Landing the geographic reference point for the arrangement and for the cadets’ knowledge of a covert route ashore.
Setting and access
The landing is identified as one of two such points, both guarded by the Second Artillery. That military presence makes the landing itself an awkward choice when Landor considers privacy. Poe instead points to a cove not far from North Landing, narrowing the search from a conspicuous, guarded approach to a less exposed nearby inlet.
The cove and cadet knowledge
Poe explains that Benny Havens brings wares to the cove; Landor corrects him, saying that Patsy brings them. The distinction ties the place to the practical movement of goods, rather than to a formal landing or military post. Its apparent seclusion is qualified when Poe acknowledges that any cadet who has smuggled beer or whiskey knows where it is. The cove may be tucked away, but it is not an undiscovered secret within the cadet community.
Role in the meeting arrangement
The cove’s proximity to North Landing makes it a workable alternative to either guarded landing. Landor settles on it as the meeting place and specifies eleven P.M.; in the exchange, the proposed invitation is one that Leroy Fry receives and feels obliged to accept. The location thus connects ordinary smuggling knowledge with the investigation’s late-night movements, while the distinction between the landing and the nearby cove remains important: North Landing anchors the directions, but the meeting is set at the cove.
